Political AffairsThe relation between the Netherlands and Egypt is governed by two elements: promoting peace and stability in Egypt, as well as in the Middle East, and the enhancement of social and economic development. The Netherlands, in cooperation with EU partners, provides support and plays a mediating role in the Middle East peace process. Furthermore the Netherlands strongly supports the Barcelona process in which the 25 members of the EU and 12 Mediterranean countries cooperate in political, economic and cultural areas. Also, full support is given to the implementation of the EU Association Agreement with Egypt, in particular to the European Neighbourhood Policy Action Plan.
The Netherlands embassy executes Dutch foreign policy by the political support of Egypt's mediating role in advocating stability in the Middle East and through support of Egypt's efforts in the Middle East Peace Process. It seeks to intensify and broaden the contacts between Dutch and Egyptian institutions in the framework of a cultural and social dialogue with the Arab world. The embassy actively supports good governance through political reform, respect for human rights and by promoting the role of civil society.
The embassy monitors and analyses Egypt's domestic and foreign policies and the political trends these reflect. It reports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague about local and regional developments likely to affect the Netherlands directly or indirectly. The embassy also explains Dutch policy to the Egyptian government and actively supports European Union efforts in Egypt and the Middle East.
