General Information
Consular assistance is one of the main tasks of any Netherlands Embassy. Consular assistance can only be given to Dutch Nationals. The Consular Officer of the Royal Netherlands Embassy Cairo commits to this task as per art. 5 of the "Vienna Treaty concerning Consular Assistance" (24th April 1963). In certain circumstances Dutch nationals can ask for assistance of the Embassy. The Dutch law does not provide the "right" to Consular Assistance, therefore the provision of assistance will be assessed by the Consular Officer.

Financial Distress
If you are in financial distress while visiting Egypt, you should investigate if there are any opportunities to resolve the problem before addressing yourself to the Netherlands Embassy.
A suggestion might be transferring money to Egypt with Western Union through Dutch Post Offices
In short this is how you can transfer money to a Western Union office in Egypt:
How to transfer the money:
- Go to a Post Office in the Netherlands;
- Bring a valid ID (e.g. your passport, or Dutch driver's license);
- Tell to which Western Union office the money needs to be transferred and the exact name of the receiver (as in the passport);
- You receive a transfer number. Tell this number to your family or friend in Egypt, who is waiting for the money.
How to collect the money:
- Go in person to the Western Union office concerned where the money was transferred to;
- Bring your passport;
- Bring the transfer number. Ask the person that transferred the money for this number. You also need to mention the exact name (as in his passport) of the person that transferred the money.
Should you not find an opportunity to resolve your situation of financial distress the Embassy can assist in the following ways:
- Transfer money from your account in the Netherlands to the account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands.
- A family member can transfer money from their account to the account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands
(For the above mentioned financial assistance chancery fees will be charged)
Missing Passport
(lost or stolen)
If your passport has been lost or stolen you should report this as soon as possible to the local police and request a police statement. Only then should one go to the Netherlands Embassy in Cairo to apply for a new travel document.
In case you are not able to submit a clear copy of your current passport, your personal data will be verified with the authority who issued the lost or stolen passport. Extra costs will be charged for this. Verification can take up to 3 working days.
After positive verification a new travel document (passport or laissez passer) can be issued.
Extra documents may be required.
